Storm season kick-off

The Gap 2008 Storm damage: ABC News image
Now that Australian AFL/NRL football codes have been settled with Grand final matches, the spring summer seasonal storm period is upon us.

Most structural inspections will focus on defective items or damage that may be present within the house structure.  This is fine however its worth considering items left of field (or backyard) that can cause harm and result in lost of property or even death.

Trees in close proximity to your home or within falling range of your family members bedrooms are a significant risk during the storm season.  In Australia eucalyptus trees are not known for establishing deep root systems which after periods of wet weather become susceptible to overturning during strong wind events.

If the subject trees are on your property trimming (in 1/2) or removal are worthy of consideration to limit potential damage.  If a tree is on a neighboring property discussing this potential problem with them is certainly worth doing.  Having a good neighbor killed in his bed during a wind storm event because of high gum trees is something I have experienced and do not want any other family to go through.
